What Calms Me
“The Lord your God in your midst,
The Mighty One, will save;
He will rejoice over you with gladness,
He will quiet you with His love,
He will rejoice over you with singing.” (Zeph 3:17)
Our fears are quieted in the Father’s love. All our anxieties, stresses and worries are hushed by His love. But in order for His love to stop the mental screams of fear, we must take the time to be still, to stop and hear His song, to hear His tune. He quiets us with His songs of truth and the assurance of His unfailing love but we must make the space to listen.
“A hurricane wind ripped through the mountains and shattered the rocks before God, but God wasn’t to be found in the wind; after the wind an earthquake, but God wasn’t in the earthquake; and after the earthquake fire, but God wasn’t in the fire; and after the fire a gentle and quiet whisper.” (1 Kings 19:12)
God’s voice wasn’t in the big and grandiose; His voice was in the stillness, a whisper. We don’t have to spend a lot of money and travel time to attend some epic event in order to have an experience with God-in order to hear Him. We just have to spend a little time quieting ourselves to a place of stillness then we can hear His whisper. Then we can “be still and know” that He is God over this (Ps 46:10), whatever your “this” may be. He’s got this!
And in that, our raging waters are stilled. Our “what if this happens” and “what if they think this about me” and the “what if that leads to …”? The waters of our soul start getting bigger breakers and bigger breakers. Our heart pumps hard, our breathing gets rapid, and our palms sweat. We are now panicking over something that hasn’t even happened yet. We have gone into problem solving mode before we even know if there is a problem or if the problem lies in our perceptions and in our panic.
Being still gives us the moment we need to speak over our raging heart, mind and soul, “Be Still”! The way Jesus spoke over the raging sea (Mark 4:39). If He can calm a sea, He can calm me. If he can calm an ocean, He can calm my circumstances.
